Laurence T. Spring has served in public education for nearly 30 years, including roles as a teacher, teacher trainer, assistant principal, principal, special education director, assistant superintendent, and 14 years as a superintendent. In all these roles, he has used his expertise and data-driven decision making to improve student achievement and make school systems more equitable.

Dr. Spring graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history from the State University of New York at Geneseo and received a master’s degree from the University of Rochester before continuing studies at Vanderbilt University and earning a doctorate in education from Manhattanville College. His areas of expertise are student assessment, school funding equity, race equity, alternatives to student suspension, and organizational change management.

In 2014, Spring was honored with the New York Civil Liberties Union Ned Pattison Award and he continues to speak on issues of equity and social justice. Dr. Spring resides in Rochester, New York with his wife and their two daughters.

After teaching school in the early part of his career, Spring received his Masters of Science in Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of Rochester in 1998 and ascended to the heights of the education profession by serving as superintendent of schools, first as an Assistant Superintendent in the Wayne Central School District in Ontario Center, New York, then as Superintendent of schools in Cortland, NY, and Schenectady, NY. In all, he served as Superintendent for 19 years, and during that time he obtained his Doctor of Education from Manhattanville College School of Education.
